WORKSHOPS
1- The NEPTUNE Project:
Nice Environment with a Process and Tools Using Norms and Examples
Date: Wednesday, December 4, 2002, 9:00-12:30 am
Summary: The European Community now plays a very active role in giving concrete expression
to the new developments taking place in modeling languages and in UML (Unified Modeling
Language) in particular. These developments are carried out mainly by the OMG (Object
Management Group).
The main objective of the NEPTUNE project (Nice Environment with a Process and Tools Using
Norms and Example), a project carried out in the context of the European Commission 5th
Framework, is to develop both a method and tools (complementary to the existing software
engineering environments) based on the use of the UML notation.
- This method, gained from considerable experience in the industrial environment, will
apply to a variety of different fields: software development, business processes and
knowledge management.
- The newly developed tools will enable UML models to be statically checked for their
coherence and consistency, according to the context in which the UML notation is used.
They will also enable professional documentation resulting from the transformation of
models to be automatically generated. This will be compliant with the context of the UML
notation and will take account of user's requirements.
The method and tools developed in this way will facilitate the application of the UML
standard as well as promoting its use in a large number of varied fields. Finally, this
work will enable solutions to be found so that the UML standard might be further improved
with a view to participating effectively in the work carried out by the OMG.

2- ISTEC: Information Society Technologies Europe-Canada
Canada-Europe Collaboration in Research & Technology Development
A Canada-Europe partnering seminar will be held during the ICSSEA 2002 Conference
dedicated to Software & Systems Engineering and their Applications

With strong cultural and trade ties world wide, Canada is a nation of exciting
opportunity, providing leadership in new technologies.
Canadians are among the greatest players in the domains of information &
communications technologies. They live and work in an environment with the largest number
of telephone users in the world paying the most affordable rates for services. They have
the greatest access to cable television networks and the lowest Internet access costs.
Canada has established leading positions in specialised markets such as graphics and
multimedia, business intelligence, learnware, Internet tools, telecommunications,
electronic commerce, and software for the wireless world.
Over the last several years, Canada has created one of the most open and attractive
business climates for new inward investment of anywhere in the world. In an advanced
R&D and business-friendly environment, Canada boasts a number of impressive and proven
business advantages such as: access to a market of more than 380 millions consumers in
North America, access to dynamic technology clusters and the most generous R&D tax
write-offs in the G7.
IST-EC is your chance to connect with Canada. If you wish to know more about Canada and
R&D co-operation possibilities, or if you are looking for partners from Canada for
joint research projects, IST-EC will help you. IST-EC is a new project supported by the
IST (Information Society Technologies) Programme of the European Union's 5th RTD Framework
Programme (FP5) and by a number of key Federal and Provincial Canadian organisations. This
project connects the European & Canadian research and business community in key areas
of IST (Information Society Technology), with a focus on the domains of e-Learning,
Culture and e-Content, e-Work and e-Commerce. If you want to have more information on
IST-EC, please visit our web site: ist-ec.ca and ist-ec.org.
