Processes and Information Systems

The term process frequently appears in administrative and business operations. It can be applied in relation to a department as well to a function within the company, or even to a partnership between firms. The present standardization, in particular for quality management (ISO 9000-9002 series) favors its use. Originally, the term process applied to manufacturing industrial goods. Today, it applies to the elaboration of any product or service as well as to any added-value creative activity. Process has become the lever for the revival of jobs dealing with organization

The term process applies not only to the development of computer systems and their maintenance, but also to any support required for the whole of the processes within a company. The use of the term process is kept for simple technical mechanisms such as the scrutiny of failures caused by the equipment. It also accompanies the emergence of Web services. It is generalized in integrated management software packages, in system integration projects and therefore plays a role in architectural definition.

A clarification is therefore necessary to distinguish this process concept from those of mechanisms, algorithms, operation, functions or procedures.
Are the rules and methods of identification, representation, implementation, and reuse the same or are they different?

• Are new formalizations to be laid down?
• Are specific tools necessary and should the workflow engines take up an important place?
• Do processes have an influence on the evolution of jobs associated with information systems and, as a result, on the corresponding training,
• Will processes be at the core of a new language common to users and computer specialists in order to improve relations between the contractors and providers?
• What are the stakes involved for businesses and, in particular, for MIS departments?

Organized by ADELI, this convention will bring up to date the present evolution of realizations, concepts, methods and tools in relation to the mastering of processes. It will examine the influence of the process concept on the life cycle and structure of information systems and computer systems.

ADELI is non-profit association which assembles individuals and representatives from business and university organizations. Its independence, the publication of its works and the fame of its members make ADELI a pool of expertise and a reference in the world of information systems. The conclusion of the studies carried out by ADELI are printed in publications which become so many reference books; these are available on the Association's website.
